Inside Out or Double Blown

Double-blown and inside-out glass pipes carry their color under a clear outer layer instead of on the surface. The color can’t chip or rub off, and the clear shell gives the pattern depth.

Inside-Out, Double-Blown and Triple-Blown

  • Inside-out: colored glass is worked inside, then cased in clear glass.
  • Double-blown: the piece is built with two walls of glass, often with color sealed between them.
  • Triple-blown: a third layer adds even more depth and heft.

Every extra layer means more time at the torch, which is why these pieces sit above our standard spoons in price. Popular pieces include the Hemisphere, Xanadu, Nostradamus and Hot Mess Double Blown. Lay-back versions are under Sherlock pipes.

About Layered Glass

What does double-blown mean on a glass pipe?

The pipe is built with two layers of glass, an inner tube and an outer shell, often with color sealed between them. Triple-blown adds a third.

Does inside-out color fade?

No. The color is sealed under clear glass, so cleaning and handling don't touch it.

Is a double-blown pipe stronger?

The extra wall adds weight and stiffness. It is still glass, so treat it with the same care.

Why do inside-out pipes cost more?

Layering and casing take extra steps at the torch and more glass.
