What is a Hash Pipe?
Is a Hash Pipe different from a regular pipe?
The most basic definition of Hash is concentrated Cannabis. It is the same as leafy Cannabis, just concentrated. There are many methods to create Hash. Each method creates a slightly different form and strength of Cannabis. Cannabis connoisseurs have attached names to differentiate the end product so the consumer knows what to expect from their purchase. Rosin, Resin, Bubble, Extract and Moroccan all describe Hash / Cannabis Concentrate. The names identify how much residual plant matter is acceptable and if solvents were used to remove plant matter.
Hash Pipe style #1
Style 1 is for less expensive Hash (Moroccan, Bubble and Extract). They are primarily used in what is called an oil rig or simply, a ‘Rig’. Rigs employ a Quartz ‘nail’, typically shaped like a bucket. A common kitchen torch is used to pre-heat the nail. Cannabis is dropped into the bucket where it is vaporized in the heat. Most Rigs also employ a ‘Carb Cap’ to move the melted Cannabis around inside the bucket before it scorches. When you put the Cannabis to the heat, there is no way to remove the Cannabis from the heat before it is scorched. Since the Hash itself is less expensive however, consumers are less worried about scorching / wasting their Hash after their draw. Reheat the bucket and swab out with a Q-Tip. When you ask what is a Hash Pipe, this style is what most consumers of Cannabis think of.
Hash Pipe style #2
Style 2 is vented for any grade of Hash because there is very little waste. A vented Hash Pipe looks like a traditional pipe with one exception. Instead of a hole at the bottom of the bowl, the holes are elevated at the top (rim) of the bowl. Instead of putting the Cannabis to the heat (scorch), a vented Hash Pipe uses a Quartz Hot Stick to put heat to the Cannabis. Using a stick allows the consumer to remove the stick (heat) and avoid scorching / wasting their Cannabis. Vented Hash Pipes are also referred to as Rosin Pipes and Live Resin Pipes to differentiate them for use with the more expensive concentration methods that yield Rosin and Resin.
Hash Pipe style #3
Style 3 looks like a straw and is often referred to as a Dab Straw. Dab Straws fail more often because they are glass, not quartz. Normally, they are inexpensive and are typically considered throw away devices. More expensive versions with more functionality (water filtration) are referred to as Nectar Collectors. Instead of a glass end, the device is fitted with a ground joint and a replaceable Quartz Tip. In both designs, the end of the straw is heated and plunged into whatever is holding the Cannabis (glass jar). Dab Straws use the same concept as a Rosin or Resin pipe (heat to the Cannabis) except that the actual pipe itself is heated instead of an inexpensive Quartz Hot Stick. The extreme heating (torch) necessary to vaporize Cannabis will crack glass where it will not crack Quartz.
