Our Gandalf Natural Perc Glass Bubbler Water Pipe doesn’t require you to have a beard, but it sure looks good with one. Functionally, the Gandalf model took a while to perfect back in 2002, torches were not as well designed and glass was more brittle, so, the model really took some doing to get the gather and then the stretch to expand uniformly. I designed the -Gandalf Glass Pipe as a throwback to the classic pipe style that I fell in love with after LOTR débuted in 2001. The Gandalf Natural Perc Glass Bubbler Water Pipe is a new take on a venerated design.We've been selling Gandalfs ever since and have several colors to choose from and even a few different functional designs like our Hash, Ash Catcher and Mag Tech editions. By chance, I noticed some unusual behavior of water while I was cleaning mine. Enough water was left in the pipe after a rinse that airflow was blocked. If I inhaled through the pipe, the water always returned to block the airflow, which is how a Natural Percolator works.Problem was, the surface tension of water caused it to climb (even the steep neck of a Gandalf) and end up in my mouth. Yuck. I broke out my old fluid dynamics book and then cross referenced it against my Scientific Apparatus books. I found that a simple in line bubble would break the surface tension and cause the water to fall back against gravity into the air flow. The Kraken Octopus Glass Water Pipe by Trident stands between 14 and 16 inches tall. It is fabricated on 44mm wide by 4mm wall thickness clear pyrex. After the classic bubble base is blown, the glass is fumed with silver for Blue and Green color change. The mouthpiece is flared and the mid section offers an ice indent and an old school Mercury Seal joint. Each piece offers a matching color bowl and a glass sculpture of an octopus wrapped around the neck.Many of the lathe operators and tube arters come from a large lamp working tree with it's roots in the soil of Jerome Baker Designs. You can see the inspirations from JBD in not only the art and decoration, but also in the downstem. It used to be that a hole was popped in the midsection of water pipes. After the proper hole size was attained, the hole was reinforced to accept a rubber grommet.All of that process still happens, but modern craft method at Trident takes its lead from scientific lamp working and employs a Mercury Seal by grinding the inner wall to accept a glass on glass downstem. The lower profile of the Mercury Seal joint on the Kraken Octopus Glass Water Pipe does not stick out like most joints. The Cosmic Series Glass Water Pipe is available once again from Chameleon Glass. The Cosmic Series Glass Water Pipe features intense wrap and rake technique.Wrap describes how a very small strand of molten color is wrapped or reeled onto the glass. Think fishing line returning back onto a fishing rod. No small feat as each individual color behaves very differently than other colors in the exact same flame setting. The artist has to master not only the lathe operation standards for clear scientific, but also each and every individual color in the model design.Rake describes the process that uses a thicker clear rod to push and pull the wrapped color into unique patterns on the glass. The rake also creates awesome color change 'windows' between the colors while also creating brand new unintended colors. These new colors are created at the boundary of different colors. Mixes of colors at these boundaries form when two different colors are schmeared together. Think Purple when a line of Red is schmeared into a line of Blue.Another sweet aspect of wrap and rake is the artist is adding glass to the base tube. Calcifers Sand Castle Glow in the Dark Glass Water Pipe is a raindrop style vessel that is perfect for water filtration. This soft glass water pipe is fitted with a low profile 19mm outer to 14mm inner diffused downstem. It is provisioned with both a complimentary bowl and quartz banger.This beautiful design is made with Soft Glass. Soft Glass allows for more color combinations not available in 'hard' glass aka Pyrex/Borosilicate. Soft Glass melts at much cooler temperatures than Hard Glass so colors that evaporate in the heat of making Hard Glass are available for use to decorate Soft Glass. Less heat also means less energy used which means lower price which means more can be used during fabrication. These tubes are hefty and have an awesome, substantial hand feel.Soft Glass is what the Ancient Greeks used to make the first known glass pipes. Back in the day, Soft Glass was also the 'go-to' raw material for water pipes before widespread adoption of Hard Glass. One of my first pieces was a Steven Dale 'Flower Vase' style made from recycled bottles collected in Los Angeles.
